Segador

Museum Beelden aan Zee, the Hague and Collection Depot Amstelveen 2020– 2023

Overview

Project Segador, a collection-wide registration and digital accessibility project involving re-organization and renovation of Beelden aan Zee’s collection depots. I was the sole member of project Segador when I laid the groundwork for it in 2020.

The refurbishment and new digital presentation of the museum’s database was the first stage of the project. I analyzed areas where the system needed technical improvement and designed the structure and goals of the final online experience itself. I was motivated by the larger importance underlying this initiative; of allowing the public to access the museum’s collection in an understandable and engaging way. For this reason, structuring a virtual space with opportunities for visitors to construct their own narratives from collection objects and stories was foregrounded in the design.

Re-Design and Re-Installation These changes have allowed for the development of a system that ensures the safe and efficient storage and movement of Beelden aan Zee’s artworks into the future. So that the team could build a strategy, a three-dimensional digital model was developed based on a comprehensive data set including hands-on measurement of the depot building, collection objects, and transportation crates and storage materials. I then worked with the new project manager to plan a distribution of collection objects and logical system of operation. Together, we communicated with art handlers to problem solve the building’s logistical challenges and conducted collection evaluations with the artistic department and museum director. Onsite, I worked in Beelden aan Zee’s small depot to re-install the on-site collection into visually descriptive categories in order to create an appealing space for visiting lenders and donors.
